A water pitcher filter primarily improves taste, whereas a reverse osmosis system removes the majority of substances dissolved in the water. Which solution is the right one depends on what you want to achieve.
How a pitcher filter works
Classic pitcher filters typically use activated carbon and an ion exchanger. Activated carbon binds chlorine as well as odors and flavors, while the ion exchanger reduces some of the limescale. This often makes the water taste milder and results in less limescale buildup in the kettle. The cartridges are small and must be changed frequently, usually every four weeks.
How a reverse osmosis system works
With reverse osmosis, water is pressed through a very fine membrane under pressure. It retains a large portion of the dissolved substances, such as limescale, salts, heavy metals, and residues. Pre-filters protect the membrane and additionally improve odor and taste. The result is very pure, soft water for drinking, cooking, and for coffee or tea.
The comparison at a glance
| Criterion | Pitcher filter | Reverse osmosis system |
|---|---|---|
| Operating principle | Activated carbon + ion exchanger | Membrane + pre-filter |
| Limescale | partially reduced | largely removed |
| Dissolved substances | minor effect | large portion retained |
| Taste | milder | very pure and neutral |
| Filter change | approx. every 4 weeks | Pre-filter approx. every 6–12 months, membrane approx. every 12–24 months, depending on water quality |
| Investment | low | higher, but for long-term use |
Which system is right for you?
- You are renting or do not want to install anything: The FLEX AIR is a countertop osmosis system without a fixed water connection. You simply fill it with tap water.
- You want filtered water directly from the tap: The RIO AIR is connected under the sink and delivers 1000 GPD direct-flow without a storage tank.
- You also want hot, chilled, or sparkling water: The INFINITY PRO combines osmosis, cooling, carbonation, and hot water up to 95 °C.
Conclusion
If you only want to improve the taste a little, a pitcher filter is sufficient. If you want the purest water possible and want to stop relying on bottled water in the long run, you are better off with a reverse osmosis system. Still unsure?
